About Google

Google was founded in September 1998 when Larry Page and Sergey Brin, then PhD students at Stanford University, developed a search algorithm they called BackRub. The company was incorporated in Menlo Park, California, and grew rapidly as its search engine outperformed competitors on relevance and speed.

Google went public on NASDAQ in 2004. In 2015, the company reorganised under a new holding company, Alphabet Inc., separating its core internet businesses from longer-term research projects such as self-driving vehicles and life sciences. Google LLC remains Alphabet's largest subsidiary.
