About Meesho

Meesho (short for 'Meri Shop') was founded in 2015 by IIT Delhi alumni Vidit Aatrey and Sanjeev Barnwal. Selected for Y Combinator in 2016, it initially enabled small businesses and individuals (mostly women homemakers) to start online stores and resell products via WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram without holding inventory.

Meesho later pivoted to a broader B2C marketplace model, competing directly with Amazon and Flipkart in India but focusing squarely on the value-conscious segment in Tier 2, 3, and 4 cities. It disrupted the market by charging zero commission to sellers, relying instead on ad revenue and logistics fulfillment.
