About IBM
IBM was formed in 1911 as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR) through the merger of three firms. It was renamed International Business Machines (IBM) in 1924. For decades, IBM was the world's dominant mainframe computer manufacturer, and the launch of the IBM PC in 1981 defined the personal computing era.
IBM has evolved significantly through strategic disposals and acquisitions. It sold its PC division to Lenovo in 2005 and its managed infrastructure business (Kyndryl) was spun off in 2021. The company's focus is now on hybrid cloud and AI, anchored by its 2019 acquisition of Red Hat — the largest in IBM's history.
