About PayPal

Confinity was founded in Palo Alto in 1998 by Max Levchin, Peter Thiel, and Luke Nosek as a security software company. It pivoted to digital payments and merged in 2000 with X.com, an online banking startup founded by Elon Musk. The combined entity adopted the PayPal name, listed on NASDAQ in 2002, and was acquired by eBay later that year.

PayPal was spun off from eBay as an independent public company in 2015. It has since expanded through acquisitions of Venmo (P2P payments), Braintree (developer payment platform), and Honey (shopping deals). PayPal operates a two-sided network of consumer accounts and merchant integrations across more than 200 markets.
