About PhonePe

PhonePe was founded in December 2015 in Bengaluru by former Flipkart executives Sameer Nigam, Rahul Chari, and Burzin Engineer. In 2016, it was acquired by Flipkart. PhonePe became the first payment app built on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and rapidly grew to dominate the Indian digital payments ecosystem.

Following Walmart's acquisition of Flipkart, PhonePe underwent a restructuring and was fully spun off from Flipkart in 2022 into an independent entity, domiciled in India. It has expanded beyond UPI payments into wealth management, insurance, lending, and the Indus Appstore.
