About Procter & Gamble

Procter & Gamble (P&G) was founded in 1837 by a candlemaker (William Procter) and a soapmaker (James Gamble). It is arguably the most influential marketing company in history; P&G essentially invented the concepts of 'brand management' and the 'soap opera' (radio dramas sponsored by P&G detergents to reach housewives).

Unlike Unilever, which has a massive food portfolio, P&G focuses almost entirely on personal care, grooming, and household cleaning. It operates a fiercely competitive 'promote-from-within' culture. In 2014, P&G executed a massive portfolio shedding, dropping 100 brands (like Duracell and Pringles) to focus purely on its 65 core, high-profit brands (like Tide, Pampers, Ariel, and Gillette).
