About Red Hat

Red Hat was founded in 1993 by Bob Young and Marc Ewing. In 1994, they released Red Hat Linux, one of the earliest and most popular Linux distributions. The company listed on the NASDAQ in 1999 during the dot-com boom, establishing a unique business model of offering open-source software for free while charging for enterprise support, training, and integration services.

IBM acquired Red Hat in 2019 for approximately $34 billion, the largest software acquisition in history at the time. Red Hat continues to operate with distinct branding, facilities, and a distinct open-source culture. Its portfolio has expanded beyond Linux to include hybrid cloud infrastructure, middleware, and management technologies.
