About SAP

SAP was founded in 1972 in Weinheim, Germany, by five former IBM employees: Dietmar Hopp, Hasso Plattner, Claus Wellenreuther, Klaus Tschira, and Hans-Werner Hector. The name stands for Systeme, Anwendungen und Produkte in der Datenverarbeitung (Systems, Applications and Products in Data Processing). The company is headquartered in Walldorf, Baden-Wurttemberg.

SAP R/3, released in 1992, introduced a client-server ERP architecture that became the global industry standard.
