About Wipro
Wipro (Western India Palm Refined Oils Limited) has one of the most unique corporate histories in India. Founded in 1945 as a manufacturer of vegetable and refined oils, Azim Premji took over the company at age 21 after his father's sudden death. In the late 1970s, sensing the vacuum left by IBM's exit from India, Premji pivoted the FMCG company into the IT sector.
Wipro started by manufacturing minicomputers and eventually evolved into a software services giant. Today, it is part of India's 'Big 4' IT services firms. Azim Premji is also renowned for his philanthropy, having transferred billions of dollars of Wipro shares to the Azim Premji Foundation to fund education and social initiatives in India.
