About Paytm

Paytm, owned by One97 Communications, was founded in 2010 by Vijay Shekhar Sharma in Noida. It started as a prepaid mobile and DTH recharge platform before adding a digital wallet in 2014. The platform experienced unprecedented growth during India's 2016 demonetization, becoming synonymous with digital payments via its ubiquitous QR codes.

Paytm expanded into a massive ecosystem including ticketing, e-commerce (Paytm Mall), wealth management (Paytm Money), and banking (Paytm Payments Bank). It listed on the Indian stock exchanges in 2021 in what was then India's largest IPO. In 2024, it faced significant regulatory challenges leading to the restriction of its Payments Bank unit.
